custom color change, without the expense of MYSTICAL PEARLS?

Got a custom paint question, or rather need for a suggestion...

i will be painting a dodge ram1500 p/u probably wednesday morning, afternoon. the truck is being rebased with the oem color, PG8, i think (if thats not it, it is DEFINITELY a 1998 Chrysler green). ANYWAY, what I want to do is put a custom mid-coat on the truck to make it change collors a little bit when light hits it on different angles. I am not looking for any HUGE, expensive color change, like the Mystical FX colors would produce, but i want to give the guy that owns it something DIFFERENT. I've already made the suggestion to the customer, and he's game. But, because he's really helped the shop out with some major metal fabrication on a 63 galaxie that we are working on (with nothing left to guide him on what the floor originally looked like, he's ot the floor pretty well rebuilt, in a a matter of a couple weeks, while the car has been in the shop for almost a year, because we were kinda lost for ideas since someone else had already cut out the floor and floor supports). Anyways, i want tothank him by giving him that "SOMETHING EXTRA" in his paint job, basically to show my thanks for HIS custom work on the Galaxie. I am doing this at the expense of the shop, so i am trying to keep the expense to a minimum.
What I want to achieve on the truck is have the truck slightly change colors from the green to a blue or purple (green is the OEM color and his favorite color, blue and purple are his next favorites, respectively).
What can I add to some MT49 (clear toner) or MPB-500 to achieve that color change? I am thinking to maybe mix up some MT49, and some variations of blue, magenta, and violet toners, to achieve a highly transparent bluish purple color to topcoat the green base before clearing. Will this work to achieve a color change appearance, or is it absolutelty NECCESARY to use the mystical pearls to achieve that illusion?

If at all possible, please reply before Tuesday, so that i have time to lay out some test panels with whatever I decide to go with so that I can decide how MUCH of the midcoat to apply, so that I am not just in the booth trying to play with the color, and winding up screwing something up...

thanx a bunch to any of you tech guys at corporate that are able to reply to this one...

There are certainly many things you can do to add a custom look to your project; however to answer your question
is it absolutelty NECCESARY to use the mystical pearls to achieve that illusion?
The Mystical Series pearls will work best for adding a semi-translucent color shift to your basecoat color. You do have other options available to you, some of which from highest to lowest in price for adding an effect type midcoat are:

FXT-9487 Cyan to Purple
FXT-9489 Green to Purple
FX-701 Sapphire (Basecoat color to Blue)
FX-702 Scarabeus (Green to Blue)
MSPX-04 Galaxy Blue Pearl
MSP-087 Fine Blue Pearl
MSP-092 Frost Blue Pearl

Another option you may consider is taking your original formuala, in this case for PG8, and experimenting by replacing the MSP-091 Green Pearl with any of the listed items above to enchance the basic color.

MT-83 BASECOAT BLACK 320.1 320.1
MT-78 PHTHALO GREEN Y/S 221.2 541.3
MT-107 PHTHALO BLUE G/S 157.2 698.5
MT-87 MEDIUM SATIN ALUMINUM 104.7 803.2
MT-86 FINE SATIN ALUMINUM 29.1 832.3
MSP-091 GREEN PEARL 11.7 844
MT-84 BASECOAT WHITE 8.9 852.9

Lastly,
I am thinking to maybe mix up some MT49, and some variations of blue, magenta, and violet toners, to achieve a highly transparent bluish purple color to topcoat the green base before clearing. Will this work to achieve a color change appearance
It wont give you a color change appearance similar to that of our color shifts, it will however resemble more of a candy overlay and may contribute to a darker overall color depending on transparency. Hopefully this answers some of your questions, dont hesitate to contact us at 800.735.0303 to explore your options ;)

Thanks a bunch for your reply, however I kinda got it a little late. I had to get to work on the truck and didnt have the time to really wait for a reply or seek opinions elsewhere. no hard feelings though...it was more so MY fault for having not looked into it 2 weeks ago when i decided to "play" with the color and yesturday, when i HAD to get started on it. BTW, Chysler paint code was PGS, not PG8 as I had previously stated...
Again, thanks a bunch for your suggestions though, as I will be sure to print out your suggestions and put them together in my OWN tech guide...which is basically the Matrix TDS Manual, plus a bunch of other products, some of which AREN'T Matrix's and some of which are either custom colors/mid-coats that I have made and used on past jobs and the set-up in the booth at the time I sprayed it (Temp, products/additives, air pressure, fan pattern, trigger pull, a spray-out, and any other important details specific to a custom job that I have done, or I also have some email and chat support print-outs of different information that I have obtained over the past year.

Anyways, what I wound up doing with this job was the following:

* sealed the truck with MP-124 Med. Gray sealer- flash time about 15 minutes...mighta been a little more since the temp in the booth was only about 62;

* Base - MSB4680VI/MR-0870 Reducer, 1 medium wet coat (my "TAC" coat), followed by 2 FULL WET COATS...coverage was achieved in the 2nd coat, but i make it a point to always lay down one more coat after hiding is achieve for color depth and uniformity - Flash Time - 15 minutes for the 1st coat, 25 minutes for the 2nd coat, and 45 minutes for the 3rd coat before clearing;

* In half-pint mixing cups to avoid wasting any more then about 4-8oz. of clear, i proceeded to mix 7oz. of RTS MS-52 Clear (MH-005 Normal Hardener) with 1 GRAM of MSP-94 Blue Green Pearl, creating a transparent almost EMERALD color. After the 45 minutes past after the last coat of color, I proceeded to lay down ONE FULL WET COAT of this Clear/Pearl concoction, making sure to back feed the air in to the gun (creating a "GURGLING" inside the paint cup) to keep the pearl well mixed after each minute or so of spraying...long enough to re-mix the clear inside the gun. but not long enough for the edges where I had momentarily stoped spraying to dry.

* after spraying that one full wet coat of "CANDY" (don't know exactly what to cll it, but i assume that this is basically what you do for candy colors, such as Candy Apple Red...is this assumption correct?), I allowed it to tack (flash) for about 15 minutes, then came back in and laid down a coat of STRAIGHT CLEAR (MS-52 Normal), allowed that the flash for about another 25 minutes, then finished off with a second coat of straight clear.

Yesturday, I painted the roof of the truck and the tail lights. Today, I covered the entire cab and sprayed the bed. Tomorrow, I plan to cover the bed, and spray the cab, tail gate, and bumpers. So far, everything looks great, color matches...or atleast as well as it CAN match, as the color DOES change at angles and under different lighting.

Anyways, once the truck is FINISHED and untaped, I will take some pics and attach a link to the before and after pics, as well as a pic of the spray out panels, which show the color by itself and another that shows the color WITH the candied coat of clear.

Thanks again BEVAN for the suggestions that you were able to get to me, even though I wound up going a different route.
I'm sure that some time in the future, I will use what you suggested, even if I have to just do some test panels for my own knowledge of what the colors will do with different products sprayed over them.
