Michael “Mad Mike” Hughes, a former AMA flat tracker and NASCAR builder and crew chief, is known to most as the “World’s Most Famous Limo Driver.” He made news and set a Guinness World Record for jumping a distance of 103 feet in a 6,500 pound Lincoln Town Car stretched limousine at Perris Auto Speedway located in Perris, California on September 28, 2002.
Since this remarkable accomplishment, Hughes has been featured on Jimmy Kimmel Live, ABC, FOX News, L.A. Times, and Las Vegas Life. He also published a tell all NASCAR book called, “What Does A Limo Driver Know About NASCAR?”
Hughes is soon to be in the spot light again, but this time he is gearing up to recreate Evel Knievel’s failed attempt to jump the Snake River Canyon. This attempt will pay tribute to Knievel on the 35th Anniversary of the historic event that took place in 1974.
Knievel’s inspiring jump was unsuccessful since the parachute of the sky-cycle deployed almost immediately after the launch. He ended up escaping with minor injuries after falling hundreds of feet down in the canyon.
Hughes and his expert team of rocket and propulsion engineers have been building a 14-foot long, 1150 pound X-2 SkyLimo that will be propelled by heating water at 500° F under 500 pounds of pressure. According to Mad Mike, “the SkyLimo will launch from a 100 foot, 45 degree ramp that will assist the rocket to reach a height of 3,500 feet and reach a speed of 350 mph.” After the launch the rocket will reach the ground assisted by a Kevlar ballistic chute.
The X-2 SkyLimo is expected to make its debut on September 7, 2009 in Lake Havasu, Arizona over the Colorado River, where television negotiations are in process and a director, producer, and field technicians have been selected. Hughes has teamed up with various companies to help in sponsoring his highly publicized jump. The infamous SkyLimo will be promoting Matrix System paint products and after the jump has been completed, it will be auctioned off to the highest bidder in the condition it ends its career with in order to help fund Hughes’ dream of owning his own Daredevil Museum. “When Matrix System was approached to sponsor the X-2, we thought that it would be a great opportunity to work with Mad Mike, who truly has a passion for his dare devil life style.
